Impossible Callings

How often have we dismissed incredible possibilities with a casual, "That's amazing, but not for me?”

P90X? Good for them, but I could never. Climb Mount Everest? Nope, thank you next. Do missions work? Absolutely not, but the people who do are incredible.

Sound familiar?

It's amusing how many life-altering stories commence with the words, "I never thought that I'd... but here I am."

Take Kristen's story, for instance.

When Kristen's husband, Adam, felt the call to mission work, her immediate response was a resounding, "Nope, not in a million years. Over my dead body."

Years later, she visited and Adam asked her again. She replied, “Oh, you’re still thinking about that?”

After Kristen and Adam went again, she experienced a profound shift in her heart—one that aligned with Adam's calling.

“It’s undeniable.” She said.

It didn't start that way, but God can turn even the harshest nos into yeses.

They took their family and served in Haiti. And even though it was the hardest thing they have ever done, God worked in many ways- they probably never even saw the depth of their impact.

Maybe the real issue lies in underestimating that God knows us better than we know ourselves.

"Oh, I could never do that."

Maybe not in our strength, but HE can. He can do anything, even soften our hearts towards things we adamantly rejected before.

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” John 15:16

Missionaries are ordinary people committed to an extraordinary God. They grapple with struggles, often more than we realize. They are imperfect and can harbor many questions. Yet, their obedience to God's calling sets them apart. Through their faith and actions, God softens their hearts, centering their desires with His. It’s far from easy, but following His call is always worth it.

So, today, I invite you to sit in God's presence. Ask Him to reveal the areas where your heart has hardened. What is He calling you to? Is there any resistance? Why? Allow Him to nudge, prod, and challenge you. Write it all down. Engage in prayer, and you’ll be surprised at what you might find.
